Currently, the majority of Rastafarians are Jamaicans. Shashemane is situated in the south of Addis Abeba; approximately 250km from the capital. Consolata missionaries have been implementing their missionary work in Shashemane almost 25 years ago. The parish has St Mary as Patron Saint. But in Amharic, it is called “Zion Mariam Bet Kristian”. The parish has 10 outstations in its jurisdiction and two other sisters’ congregations. In general, “Zion Mariam Bet Kristian” has about 3000 faithful. On Nov. 30, 2008, Christians of the Zion Mariam Parish celebrated in a wonderful way the annual feast of their parish. The Eucharistic celebration was presided over by the Excellency, Bishop Abraham Desta, Bishop of Meki Vicariate; concelebrated by 14 priests from different parishes. Many people from different vicariates came to attend the celebration. The Feast was also livened up by the presence of some friends from Italy of Rev. Fr. Silvio Sordella(the Parish Priest). The Mass started at 9.00 and finished at 12.15, followed by the Eucharistic procession. Putting an end to the celebration, Bishop, priests, sisters, and guests were all invited to share a moment of “koinonia”, which was justified by the sharing of the splendid meal.
May Our Lady always protect Zion Mariam Parish, Priests, Sisters and all the faithful. Amen!
