For this end, he developed the Consolata Theological Circle (CTC), which would bring theological formation to lay people. Yes, the CTC is a bold idea.
But his example, I believe, is the deeper reason why so many came to see him off. Whenever I met him, he never failed to greet me with a smile. (Granted I do not live with him, so who knows what he looks like in the morning). In any case, many of those who were graced to see him "too much," were able to see how much he poured out for others, and how little he kept for himself. One who pushed and strained his intellect and body, to serve when it seemed useless, to preach when perhaps none were listening, and to accept what may come, even when what may come, seems unacceptable.
Toronto is both richer and poorer because of his presence: poorer because a wise priest is departing; and richer because of the wisdom that was handed on to the many different members of the community. Fr. Mattei thank you for your service to the Catholics of Toronto (and beyond), and we pray that you may continue to pour out your life for Christ and his bride with whom you shown your great love and zeal all these years.
