Si avvicina la Pasqua, nostra festa per eccellenza. Gesù è risorto!

Però il giovedì prima di iniziare la sua passione istituisce l’Eucaristia. Ma prima ancora fa un grande gesto: si alza da tavola, depone le vesti, prende un asciugamano, lo lega ai fianchi, versa dell’acqua in un catino, lava i piedi ai discepoli e  li asciuga  e al termine dice: “Vi ho dato un esempio perché anche voi facciate come io ho fatto a voi”(Gv 13,1-20). Gesù ha istituito il servizio come un sacramento. Noi Fratelli della Consolata dobbiamo avere il servizio nel nostro DNA. Il servizio è amore, donazione, comprensione, passione, zelo missionario. E’ dare la vita per gli altri. E’ vedere Gesù nel povero, nell’ammalato, nell’abbandonato, nello sfruttato, nell’emarginato….

Dunque il giovedì santo è anche la nostra festa. 

Gesù è vestito con una tunica rossa, per indicare che egli è il Re, ma cinge ai fianchi l’asciugatoio come servo. Il significato è chiaro: il Re è venuto per servire e non per essere servito.

Lavando i piedi agli apostoli, Gesù ha voluto rivelare il modo di agire di Dio nei nostri confronti, e dare l’esempio del suo comandamento nuovo: di amarci gli uni gli altri come Lui ci ha amato, cioè dando la vita per noi. Giovanni nella sua prima lettera scrive: “Da questo abbiamo conosciuto l’amore: egli ha dato la sua vita per noi; quindi anche noi dobbiamo dare la vita per i fratelli …. Figliuoli, non amiamo a parole né con la lingua, ma con i fatti e nella verità” (3,16-18). L’amore quindi è il servizio concreto che rendiamo gli uni agli altri. L’amore non sono parole, sono opere e servizio; un servizio umile, fatto nel silenzio e nel nascondimento, come Gesù ha detto: “Non sappia la tua sinistra ciò che fa la tua destra” (Mt 6,3).

Questo della lavanda dei piedi non è l’unico passo del vangelo con riferimento al servizio. Ce ne sono altri, come: “chi vuole diventare grande tra voi, sarà vostro servitore, e chi vuole essere il primo tra voi sarà schiavo di tutti” Mc 10,35-35, Lc 22,24-27.  

Faccio mie alcune spiegazioni sul servizio di Papa Francesco che ha durante le omelie  del mattino nella cappella Domus Sanctae Marthae. Nel commentare  il Vangelo di Luca (17,7-10) ai discepoli che chiedono “Signore, accresci in noi la fede”, Gesù risponde: “Se aveste fede quanto un granello di senape, potreste dire a questo gelso: sradicati e vai a piantarti nel mare, ed esso vi obbedirebbe”. Il Signore, ha spiegato il Papa, parla di una fede potente, tanto forte da essere capace di fare grandi meraviglie, ma ad una condizione: che questa sia inserita entro la cornice del servizio, che porti al servizio. Un servizio totale, come quello del servo che ha lavorato tutta la giornata, e quando torna a casa deve servire il Signore, dargli da mangiare e poi riposarsi.

Il servizio richiesto è totale perché è lo stesso messo in pratica da Gesù. Lui ha fatto strada con questo atteggiamento di servizio, lui è il servo, lui si presenta come il servo, quello che è venuto a servire e non ad essere servito.

Immessa sulla strada del servizio, la fede farà miracoli. Al contrario, un cristiano che riceve il dono del battesimo, ma poi non lo porta avanti sulla strada del servizio, diventa un cristiano senza forza, senza fecondità, un cristiano per se stesso, per servire se stesso, per procurare vantaggio a se stesso.

Il Signore ha detto chiaramente: il servizio è unico, e non si possono servire due padroni, Dio e le ricchezze.

Noi possiamo allontanarci da questo atteggiamento di servizio innanzitutto per un po’ di pigrizia. Diventiamo cioè comodi come hanno fatto quelle cinque ragazze pigre che aspettavano lo sposo ma senza curarsi di avere l’olio necessario nelle lampade. E la pigrizia rende tiepido il cuore. Allora per comodità siamo portati a trovare giustificazioni. La pigrizia ci allontana dal servizio e ci porta alla comodità, all’egoismo. Non basta essere cristiani, andare a messa, essere buoni e dire le preghiere. La parola servizio vuol dire: servizio a Dio nell’adorazione, nella preghiera, nelle lodi, servizio al prossimo e servizio fino alla fine. Su questo Gesù è forte e raccomanda: “Così anche voi, quando avrete fatto tutto quello che vi è stato ordinato, adesso dite: siamo servi inutili. Bisogna prestare un servizio gratuito,  senza chiedere niente.

C’è poi la possibilità di allontanarsi dall’atteggiamento di servizio, ed è quella di impadronirsi delle situazioni. E’ quanto è accaduto anche agli apostoli, che allontanavano le persone perché non disturbassero Gesù, ma in realtà anche per essere comodi loro: cioè si impadronivano del tempo del Signore, si impadronivano del potere del Signore, lo volevano per il loro gruppetto. In pratica si impadronivano di questo atteggiamento di servizio trasformandolo in una struttura di potere.

Invece il Signore ci parla di servizio in umiltà. Come ha fatto Lui che essendo Dio umiliò se stesso, si abbassò, si annientò per servire.

Il Padre Fondatore nell’omelia per la imposizione dei crocifissi della partenza dei Coad. Bartolomeo e Giacomo disse: “Voi dovete aiutare i sacerdoti missionari nei loro ministeri, facendo specialmente l’uffizio di Marta … , ma c’è un sacrificio da fare, di avere molta pazienza coi poveri, trattarli sempre bene e guai se scappasse la pazienza, sarebbero anime che si allontanerebbero per sempre. Dunque pazienza e mansuetudine.

Vi do un pensiero da portare con voi e tenere in mente tutta la vita: santificatevi e non solo come sono obbligati tutti i cristiani con l'osservanza dei santi comandamenti, ma di più,  con l’osservanza dei consigli evangelici per essere degni seguaci ed apostoli di nostro Signore Gesù Cristo. Solamente facendo voi santi e grandi santi, potete ottenere il secondo fine, proprio del nostro Istituto: salvare, salvare molte anime.” (Conf. IMC,1, 423-424, 14 febbraio 1912).

WASH  ONE  ANOTHER’S  FEET

Easter is approaching, our feast par excellence. Jesus has risen!

But on Thursday before starting his passion he institutes the Eucharist. But first makes a big gesture: he gets up from the meal, takes off his outer clothes, takes a towel, ties it to his hips, pours water into a basin, washes the feet of the disciples and dries them and at the end says: "I have given an example so that you may do as I have done to you "(Jn 13: 1-20). Jesus instituted service as a sacrament. We Consolata Brothers must have the service in our DNA. Service is love, donation, understanding, passion, missionary zeal. It is giving life for others. It is to see Jesus in the poor, in the sick, in the abandoned, in the exploited, in the marginalized ....

So Holy Thursday is also our feast.

Jesus is dressed in a red robe, to indicate that he is the King, but he fasten round the towel to the sides as a servant. The meaning is clear: the King has come to serve and not to be served.

Washing the feet of the apostles, Jesus wanted to reveal God's way of acting towards us, and to set the example of his new commandment: to love one another as He has loved us, that is, giving life for us. John in his first letter writes: "From this we have known love: he has given his life for us; so we must also give our lives for our brothers ...  we do not love in words or with our tongue, but with deeds and in truth "(3: 16-18). Love is therefore the concrete service that we render to each other. Love is not words, it’s work and service; a humble service, done in silence and without appearing, as Jesus said: "Do not let your left hand know what your right hand is doing" (Mt 6: 3).

This of the washing of the feet is not the only passage of the gospel with reference to service. There are others, such as: "whoever wants to be great among you will be your servant, and whoever wants to be the first among you will be a slave to all" Mk 10: 35-35, Lk 22: 24-27.

I make some explanations on the service that Pope Francis makes during his homilies in the morning at the Domus Sanctae Marthae chapel. about the Gospel of Luke (17: 7-10) in which the disciples request "Lord, increase our faith in us" Jesus replies: "If you had faith as much as a mustard seed, you could say to this sycamine tree: be rooted up and be planted in the sea, and it would obey you". Francis explained that the Lord, speaks of a powerful faith, so strong as to be able to do great wonders, but on one condition: that this be inserted within the framework of service. A total service, like that of the servant who has worked all day, and when he comes home he must serve the Lord, prepare dinner for him and then relax. The service required is total because it is the same one put into practice by Jesus. He has made his way with this attitude of service, he is the servant, he presents himself as the servant, the one who came to serve and not to be served.

When set on the path of service, faith will do wonders. On the contrary, a Christian who receives the gift of baptism, but then does not take it forth the path of service, becomes a Christian without strength, unfruitful, a Christian for himself, to serve himself, to take advantage of himself.

The Lord has made it clear: service is unique, and two masters, God and riches can not be served.

We can distance from this attitude of service primarily for a bit 'of laziness. In other words, we become comfortable like those five lazy girls who were waiting for the groom but without bothering to have the necessary oil in the lamps. And laziness makes the heart lukewarm. So for convenience we are led to find excuses. Laziness takes us away from service and leads us to comfort, selfishness. It is not enough to be a Christian, to go to Mass, to be good and to say prayers. The word service means: service to God in adoration, in prayer, in praise, service to our neighbour and service to the end. On this Jesus is strong and recommends: " So you olso, when you have done all that has been commanded you, now you say: we are useless servants. We need to provide a free service, without asking for anythingin return

Then there is the possibility of moving away from the attitude of service, and that is to take possession of situations. This is what happened to the apostles, who kept people away so as not to disturb Jesus, but in reality also to be comfortable themselves: that is, they took possession of the Lord's time, seized the Lord's power, they wanted him for their little group. In practice they took possession of this attitude of service, transforming it into a power structure. Instead the Lord speaks to us of serving in humility. How he did that being God humbled himself, he lowered himself, he debased himself to serve.

Our Founding Father in his homily for the imposition of the crucifixes of the departure of the Coad. Bartholomew and James said: "You must help the missionary priests in their ministries, especially doing the work of Martha ... but there is a sacrifice to be done, to have a lot of patience with the poor, to treat them always well and do not let the patience go away, they would be souls that would move away forever. Therefore patience and meekness.  I give you a thought that you will keep in mind the whole of your life: sanctify yourselves and not just as the common Christians are obliged to observe the holy commandments, but more, with the observance of the evangelical counsels to be worthy followers and apostles of our Lord Jesus Christ. Only by making yourselves saints and great saints you can obtain the second goal of our Institute: to save, to save many souls "(Conf. IMC, 1, 423-424, 14 February 1912).
